RED BIRD MISSION

As you know by now, the Mission Outreach Committee of the HUMC has been approved by the Red Bird Mission in Beverly, Kentucky for a Work Project from July 17-24, 2010.  The mission has accepted six members from the Hawley United Methodist Church to join a team of more than 160 Christians representing United Methodist churches from across the country to work on projects in the Red Bird Missionary Conference.

Founded by the Evangelical United Brethren Church, Red Bird has become a primary mission of our denomination - providing ministries in this region of the Appalachian Mountains since 1921. Today the need remains critical in this isolated, rural distressed area. Chronic poverty, lack of jobs, poor housing, and rugged mountain terrain provide obstacles to a fuller life for the residents of the area. Red Bird strives to meet these needs through ministry in five areas: Education, Health and Wellness, Community Outreach, Economic Opportunity and Community.

"….if you do it unto the least of my brethren, you do it unto me"

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

WE’LL NEED POWER EQUIPMENT, (BATTERY OPERATED SANDERS), POWER DRILLS (ELECTRIC); AND FIVE (5) LARGE PACKAGES OF PAPER TOWELS.  CHECKS MAY BE SENT TO THE CHURCH TO HELP PURCHASE THESE ITEMS. ALL THE POWER EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES THAT WE BRING TO RED BIRD WILL BE LEFT THERE.

PLAN TO ATTEND OUR EFFORTS TO FUND RAISING BRUNCH ON JUNE 20TH FOLLOWING THE WORSHIP SERVICE.  REV COX WILL COMMISSION THE TEAM ON SUNDAY MORNING, JUNE 27 AT THE 9:45 AM WORSHIP SERVICE

This trip is a prototype, friends.  Next year we want to double the numbers of Team Members.

If you have any questions, please call me at (570) 775 6695

MNISTERS OF WORSHIP BREAKFAST

There will be a light breakfast served between services on Sunday August 29th for the many and varied ministers of worship that are part of church. If you are an usher, a greeter, a liturgist, a nursery worker, or one of the worship leaders, the Worship Team is inviting you to come and share a continental style breakfast and discuss some of the recent changes in our worship. It is also a time for the Worship Team to get some input from you.

Book Club

The book club will be gathering on Wednesday evening, 6:30 p.m. July 28th.  The book to be read and discussed is The Help by Kathryn Stockett. This will be a gathering at Marianne & Bill Wolf’s house with a light dessert. Please call Marianne and Bill for directions to their house at 857-5118.

Saturday Luncheon
The Hawley Church has joined with the 1st Presbyterian Church in offering a Saturday luncheon to those in the community who are in need of food and fellowship.  The First Presbyterian Church offers a luncheon on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month, and HUMC provides a luncheon on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturdays.  Members of the congregation are invited to sign up for a Saturday and prepare a meal which would be composed of soup, breads, a light dessert and beverages. Food is served between noon and 1:00 and open to the community free of charge.
